Development Diary #4, posted on the official Dead Matter Forums on November 15th, 2017.
In this diary we take a look at some gameplay changes, get to see vehicles (and towing) for the first time, the new Lee Enfield rifle and some new buildings.
Author Note: This post was made early in the Dead Matter development and some of the information provided may be outdated at the time of reading.
Gameplay Changes
Lead programmer jooni has been working on player movement, reworking the camera modifiers, including head-bob. He assures us that head-bob will be optional though, you will be able to adjust it to your likings, or disable it completely. He also worked on the user interaction interface to allow a wider variety of ways to interact with objects, an essential step to further development in this area.
Vehicles and Towing
For the first time we get a glimpse of how vehicles will look in the game. At this point it is all about the base mechanics, the vehicles shown are taken from the unreal engine marketplace, and serve only for testing purposes, they will not be used in the final game. Entering and exiting.
In this second clip we see a demonstration of what towing trailer will be like. The physics look great and it will allow for a large variety of gameplay options...
Trailers
To go along with this feature, Dead Matter developer Nomad has finished some great looking trailers. One of them for normal transportation and one for fuel, gas or similar.
Towing Other Vehicles
Concept artist Vitka sketched up a trailer for towing other vehicles that cannot move on their own anymore, a very nice gameplay mechanic to have.
Lee Enfield Rifle
Lead weapons and prop artist Dusty has been working on a Lee Enfield rifle...
Modular Barn
As mentioned in the second of the development diaries, most of the buildings in Dead Matter are composed of modular pieces, to allow for a large amount of variations. If you played Fallout 4 and its settlement system you have a pretty good idea what this means. The same goes for this recently finished Barn set, which looks really good. The last image gives you an idea of what is meant with modular, the pieces can be mixed to potentially allow for hundreds of variations.
Suburban Houses
Suburban house assets have been remade from scratch, they will make use of the same modular system to allow for variety.
